Long time no see! I’ve been visiting family and doing a lot of sewing. A couple nice keepers and one miserable failure (future posts).
Here’s a recently sewn jacket, a variation of a favorite pattern from Butterick. It’s done in ‘Taxi Yellow’ microfleece from Fabric Mart, and it kept me warm through 5 cold days in Orlando last week. Nice!
I first made this pattern 4 years, with a lined hood taken from a cape pattern, B5807. It fit perfectly on the View A neckline! It was also fleece, but was a very lightweight and stable variety from JoAnns. My new jacket is mid-weight fleece and has a lot more stretch.
This time, I used View A for the front,
and View B for the back.
So far I haven’t put on the pockets, but I think I will, since I keep reaching for them. Mine have rounded corners at the bottom, pretty cute.
Something else I rounded was the point on the collar. I just didn’t want to struggle with the point and end up with a rounded collar anyway because of the bulky fabric!
I generally avoid the angst of sewing buttonholes in fleece, so I used four snaps (size 4) for closure – with buttons sewn in place on the outside. Works great.
I just love the back detail and two-piece sleeves.
Sewing notes:
- Size 12.
- To break up the front a bit, I cut it with a yoke.
- I used 3/8″ topstitching throughout.
- There was lots of staystitching and basting during the construction! Although the fleece has no vertical stretch, it has 80% stretch across the width. Had to tame that beast…
- The sleeves on the pattern are short – I added 1″.
- Fusible interfacing doesn’t work on fleece, so I used sewn-in broadcloth interfacing on the collar and front facing.
- I raised the armscye by 1/2″ at the shoulder to compensate for the stretch in the material.
- And I flattened the sleeve head quite a bit to fit the armscye with no gathers.
- For a little Jungle January fun, I faced the back yoke with an animal print. It also serves as a facing for the back neckline.
It’s almost 7 p.m, time for the Australian Tennis Open! Bye for now – Coco
Oh, that is so pretty, Coco. The color especially. I have that pattern and have never used it. You have inspired me again. And in fleece too.

I love that jacket and it looks so good on you. I am wondering if I need one too as here in the UK the weather is behaving quite oddly. Yesterday it was snowing and really cold and today it is going up to 11C and is now sunny, so we need to be prepared for all sorts of weather !

That colour will certainly make you smile every time you wear your jacket. I hope you have many colder days….and then you have an excuse to make more!

Thanks, Ruth. I’m enjoying making jackets so much, I might just do it regardless of the weather.

Thanks, Vicki. I LOVE topstitching – doing it on fleece is so satisfying!

This looks so cosy! I love the collar and the back detail especially. The colour is so cheery too, it’s very grey in England right now so it made me smile to see such a happy colour coat.

Thank you, Patricia. I was looking at the UK weather on BBC last night – cold and a bit messy! and windy. Hope you are staying warm.

What a FUN jacket. Love the changes you made. It’s nice to see someone else that just has to tweak things now and then. Color is great.

Thanks, Margene. I’ve gotten so that I seem to modify everything, but it adds so much fun to a sewing project.

Thank you, Irene. Sometimes I’m tempted to empty my remnant stash, then along comes an opportunity to use something, like this bit of tiger print.

What a fabulous creation! Your modifications really enhanced the style. Can you explain a little more about raising the armscythe at the shoulder? Is it adding paper to the pattern at the shoulder (kind of a reverse of a sloping shoulder adjustment)?, or shortening the length of the shoulder between the sleeve seam and the collar seam? Thank you

Hi Karen! I shortened the shoulder seam by 1/2″ at the armscye edge, trued down each side. Sorry this was confusing 🙂

Yep, love the back detail. Love the animal print for the back facing and more than anything, LOVE the color. I can’t wear this color at all so I always covet it.
Just finished a jacket similar in style minus the back detail and very boxy so I have been contemplating adding a inside waist casing and running either a draw cord or slightly smaller elastic to give it some shape. And was trying to decide if I wanted to mess with button holes or go with snaps. I think you have just convinced me that snaps is the way to go.
Glad yours kept you warm in Orlando. Somehow, that just sounds wrong.

Thanks so much – I felt really brave ordering this color, but it really is fun and surprisingly versatile. I understand what you mean with your jacket. Sometimes a bit of ‘parka treatment’ really helps a boxy garment. Glad you like the snaps! Kind of a pain to do them but they work great.

What a warm and cuddly jacket! Can’t believe you needed it in Orlando! The details lift it out of the ordinary – I love the U-shaped back detail, two-piece sleeves and the leopard print lining. Brilliant. The colour is fabulous for cloudy, bleak winter days. A great success.

Thanks so much! Yes, we get a little cold weather, Dec to Mar. It was in the 40’s F in Orlando – Disneyworld actually closed some attractions due to cold and wind. I’m so accustomed to warm weather that the annual cold snap really gets to me!
